Understanding the upcoming WAKO rule changes in 2025: What you need to know
As we approach the start of 2025, athletes and competitors are preparing for a new era in kickboxing. The World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) is introducing significant changes to its rules, which will affect the equipment, uniforms and safety gear used in competitions. In this blog post, we explain the upcoming changes, why they are important, and why it is smart to invest in WAKO-approved equipment.
The WAKO Approved Label: A Step Towards Safer and Fairer Competitions
The WAKO Approved label is being introduced as part of WAKO’s ongoing efforts to ensure the highest level of safety and fairness for athletes at all levels of competition. As WAKO works towards becoming an Olympic sport, these new regulations reflect the ever-evolving standards within the global kickboxing community.
The label will be woven with UV thread, a groundbreaking feature that prevents counterfeiting. This ensures that athletes are using equipment manufactured under strict safety guidelines. With the new rules, judges will be able to easily verify the authenticity of equipment, providing a smoother competition experience.
Important rule changes
2025: The first phase of change
From January 2025, all WAKO tournaments will require that safety equipment have a WAKO approved label visible on the outside of the product. This includes head protectors, gloves, shin guards and other protective equipment. For clothing, the new label currently only applies to WAKO World & European Championships and WAKO World Cups.
2026: Full implementation of the label requirement
From 2026, the WAKO-approved label will be mandatory for all safety equipment in all WAKO tournaments, regardless of level. Clothing and uniforms must also carry the new label at all competitions worldwide.
What does this mean to you?
CombatStore.no has a large stock of products that do not yet have the new label. During a transitional period, these products will be sold separately from the WAKO label. Please note that according to WAKO rules we are not allowed to sell the labels separately , only head protection straps. This means that customers must purchase ready-made WAKO-approved equipment with the label already attached.
